They prize themselves in patient oriented care. There are several delivery packages available from around USD3000 and up. Some pros about the hospital are that they are willing to work with you on a birth plan, allow the husband or advocate to accompany the whole way, and provide meals of your choice. Cons include low English level of doctors, having to wear delivery pants, having to move to a delivery room, did not perform circumcisions, and do not accept credit cards.

The hospital has quickly built a good reputation and is now one of the preferred hospitals at which to deliver a baby in Qingdao by foreigners. Although there are some doctors that speak some English, for those that are not able to speak Chinese, it is vital to have a translator. It should also be remembered that it is a Chinese hospital, so paying for bills and having tests performed are not going to be “Western” style. The hospital is clean and bright and the staff are friendly. The price is slightly more expensive than a public Chinese hospitals, but considerably cheaper than Western hospital in Beijing or Shanghai. They have several packages available depending on your needs and desires. The doctors & nurses push for natural delivery. Epidurals can be administered, but are not pushed. Cesareans are available if medically needed. They also have laboring tubs that mothers can use.

Because there are no GYN/OB specialists in the International Clinic, visits will be done with a Chinese doctor and a nurse translator from the International Clinic. For routine check-ups it is important to be aggressive about asking questions and getting answers. It is possible for the father to be allowed in the delivery room. In order to do this, permission must be obtained from the hospital. Most likely, the OB will not be able to authorize it, but he or she will need to get approval by someone with higher authority. (Be sure that this permission is written in the medical chart, or ask the doctor for a letter stating that permission has been granted.) Regardless of approval, if a C-section is necessary, no one will be able to be with you at the time of delivery. As Qingdao Municpal Hospital is very much a Chinese hospital, be prepared to bring everything with you to the hospital.

The food was fantastic and the quality of care was good, though a bit lacking when it comes to compassion. Many Westerners say that it very similar to giving birth in their home country when it comes to procedures, professionalism and quality. The facilities are a bit lacking, however, in that there are no other services (like cafe etc…), no English TV and no place to get snacks.

This is a private clinic run by Korean nurses and doctors. Located in Ming Ren Square, the building itself is cold and unwelcoming, but the clinic is very clean and small. The workers are very friendly. During checkups the doctors and nurses respect privacy and try and make the patient feel as comfortable as possible. Although the OB/GYN nurse doesn’t speak any English, the doctor speaks it fairly well and is very careful to think before he speaks. He performs all the exams (ultrasounds and pelvic exams) and is very thorough. The clinic doesn’t deliver babies, so only prenatal care is offered. The doctor recommends delivery at Long Tian Hospital, Municipal Hospital, Marie Hospital or Woman & Infant’s Hospital. They also provided pediatric care with imported immunizations from Korea. It is a slightly more expensive than Chinese hospitals, but far cheaper than Western hospitals & clinics.
