I am a bit freaked out — we need to give our 8-week old some more of her vaccines soon — she had gotten her first ones outside of China — so are the vaccines given here safe? Should I try to get imported brands? Keep in mind I live in the boondocks — maybe we should go to a modern city?
thx

Hey, Geoff. Where are you currently living? Maybe we can find out some information about what is available in your region.
For our kids, we did a mix of "local" vaccines, imported vaccines, and using our time in the States to get some vaccines. We had a lot of Korean clinics near us in Qingdao the last several years and they were able to import some vaccines.

Hi Jeremy — we live in Taian (at Taishan)in Shandong — we are now thinking maybe to forgo the vaccines and wait till we go back to Canada for the summer — we did a bunch of online research last night and it seems like it might be a bit risky here to get vaccines — for our comfort level anyway — there have been a number (over 100) of vaccine-related deaths in China (but of course there have also been a number of babies too!) — and I guess there is still debate out there for how necessary are vaccines? (i'm for vaccines actually but am a bit concerned doing them here)
I don't know — as for waiting till summer I know it's best to follow the immunization schedule but I also know it still works (but maybe not as well?) if you are a few months off here and there. And if you do have any suggestions about our area I would love to hear them.

Geoff, with my two boys we delayed vaccines and didn't really follow the schedule. I'm not super set on what I believe about vaccines . . . and so that is why we waited. With all the travel and living in China we felt we really should do vaccines but I wanted to make sure we got good quality ones. I have heard stories about the vaccines, although I will say that our daughter received all her vaccines from a local Chinese hospital (5 years ago). She seems to be fine, no bad side effects that we know of, but I can't say for certain that they were effective without doing further blood tests.
Before I go on I want to say I'm not a doctor and so can't say anything for sure but I think for the most part it's fine if you delay vaccines. However in doing that I do know that it's important for some vaccines, the follow up shot, be of the same kind. For example, I think it's Hep A that has two different types a live one and a dead, you need to make sure that you get the same one and not one and then the other. Do you understand what I mean? I would def. talk to a doctor from Canada and get advise from him/her.
Lastly, how easy is it for you to get to Hong Kong? I'm pretty sure you could get safe vaccines there. But I know it can be difficult and expensive to get there, plus a baby makes everything just a bit more complicated.
