I'm a foreign teacher living in Wuhan. My husband and I are hoping to have our first child here. We aren't actually pregnant yet but we would like to find out about various possibilities beforehand. I'm a little nervous about finding a doctor/hospital who will allow us more freedom in having a natural birth without drugs and with more privacy. We would love to have the baby at home with a midwife but we are doubtful of finding a midwife. Does anyone have any information about the situation in Wuhan or about pursuing these kinds of natural childbirth plans in a large city but one that is still not like Beijing or Shanghai? Thanks for the input!

I have a friend who lives in Wuhan who I will ask if she can reply to you. Talking with her though I believe that the hospitals in Wuhan strongly favor C-sections and don't like to work towards natural birth.
I have another friend who looked into have a midwife & home birth. I will also ask her to reply to you as well.

Thank you for your thoughts Jacquelyn! I would love to hear more from your friend who lives in Wuhan. I would also really appreciate hearing from your friend who looked into midwives and home birth. I will also look into the hospital you mentioned in Beijing. Thank you for your help!

Hi Emily, I'm Jacquelyn's friend who looked into midwife assisted home birth in China. I found one midwife and she was in Shandong. She was western trained but still Chinese. I think her name is Mavis Chen or I found her through Mavis. This is her email address: mavis0801@sina.com
In the end I decided to go back to the US for my home birth. It was amazing! I wanted to be able to chose my midwife and wanted to feel entirely comfortable. If you want to know more you can email me at: valeriedw1@gmail.com

Hi, sorry for hijacking but if you have a homebirth, how do you register the baby etc? I know what the procedure is for the US and Russia but I am just curious about China. Thank you.

Hi Emily,
My wife Lisa provides Doula Services in Chengdu. If you want to come to Chengdu, there is a wonderful hospital here that works with women to have natural childbirth. Lisa has assisted in many deliveries there. Three in the past two weeks. The MD has become very open to new ideas and we have seen him implement them with great success. The hospital also allows the husband to be present, cut the cord, and allows skin to skin after delivery.
For more information about Lisa's Childbirth Services, check out our web page: http://www.mychina-solutions.com
The hospital's name is: Newborn Maternity Hospital, Dr. Yang
You can also read Kathy Miller's post here on Having a Baby in China
Wishing you a happy and healthy experience with your delivery,
David and Lisa

I'm not exactly sure of the procedure for this, but I do know that it is very hard to get the hospital to sign off on the birth if it does happen at home. There are laws that prevent hospitals to sign off on a baby that wasn't delivered in the hospital. We experienced a home birth very near us and it was a huge debacle. The only saving factor was that the foreign doctor who cut the cord was working at the hospital.
So, unless you have a doctor friend who can cut the cord, do your best to get to the hospital. :)
I'll see if we can't get some authoritative tips on what to do if you do have an accidental home birth in China here on the page.

Hi Everyone!
I just wanted to say that just this week I had a meeting with a mom who had a home birth here in Shanghai this past December, and she was issued the birth certificate from a Chinese hospital for her baby without any problems or delays. It seems that (at this particular hospital, in Shanghai, at least) the biggest issue is to make sure that you have received prenatal care at a hospital on a somewhat regular basis. Once the hospital has a record of you, your pregnancy, etc. it *shouldn't* be a big deal to head over there after the birth of the baby and have them issue you a birth certificate. In this case, the parents ran into a bit of trouble with a retained placenta, and they were offered prompt care upon arrival at the hospital, and were not even questioned about the birth. Not to say this is how it would be everywhere!
Hope that helps, too!
Meriah.
