Wondering if vaccinations are required by law as we don't vaccinate and considering having a baby in china, where would I find out about vaccination laws in china?

Hi, MarieK. I had a friend call a couple of places to find out the answer to your question.

Basically, the hospitals give the initial vaccines at birth. As you can imagine, it is assumed that all babies will be vaccinated. However, it is not a requirement. After the initial vaccines given at birth, the parents are responsible for keeping current with the children's vaccine schedule. Since you do not vaccinate, you will need to be very clear from the beginning that you do not want your child to get the initial vaccinations.

My friend called a the local Disease Control Center (in Qingdao). Below are some specific questions and answers:

What are the vaccine requirements for Foreigners and Chinese?
For foreigners, no obligatory requirement. Parents decide for their own children. For Chinese, not compulsive either. However, it's strongly recommended by the government to have the vaccines for all the babies, Chinese and foreign, and the vaccines are free. Also, if children need to go to a Chinese kindergarten or school, they will need to see the vaccine records.

Is it possible to accept some vaccines, but not others?
Yes, you can skip some if you want. Actually, when you go to get the vaccines, you are given an "agreement book" about all the vaccines and you can decide whether or not, and what kind of vaccines to get, and sign your name after each vaccine. If you don't want to get certain kinds, don't sign. (Currently in China, the "default" vaccines are free, but if you want to choose to pay, you can get the imported ones (e.g. for Poliomyelitis, OPV is free, IPV is 198 yuan each dose and has to be reserved.)

Is it possible to delay any or all vaccines until a different time, for example, in order to use a different hospital?
You can wait till later. But you need to inform the hospital early, or they will just do it.

Hope this is helpful!

Maybe others can share their experiences.

MarieK,
I know that being a forgiener you can insist on doing a lot of things and the doctors, nurses & midwives will be more willing to oblige than with local Chinese. But I will say it will take a lot of fighting for and staying on top of it. If you don't want them to give shots at birth you will just need to make that clear before hand and then at the time of birth and then at the time for the shots (usually a day after). Just prepare yourself to fight for what you want.
This principal really goes with just about anything in China, especially with giving birth. I know of many experiences where people have wanted to do things that isn't typically done, they fought for it and it happened. One big thing recently is waiting for the umbilical cord to stop pulsing and then cut it, also, as soon as the baby is born to have the baby skin to skin and nurse right away. You can do these things, but since they aren't normal practice you will need to talk about it before hand and make it clear what you want (it's the part of making things clear that is the difficult sometimes).

Wow, thank you both Jeremy and Jacquelyn for being so helpful and without judgement of our not vaccinating, as usually not well received. I understand the need for vigilance as that was also the case for our first child who was born in Indonesia and we had to communicate our wishes many many times in order to have things done our way…I've found that pretty standard practice with Indonesian and Chinese alike, they tend to respond best to micromanagement which has been a challenge for a delegator like myself : ) I also have some questions re. homeopathy in china so I'll start a new post.
Thanks!
