Hi, Kaya. I contacted a friend who knows some info about Zhuhai.

Is the hospital your referring to called, Zhuhai Kowloon Hospital? Not much is known about it except that there are supposedly some doctors that can speak English.

Here's some basic information below:

Address:
1004 Jiuzhou Middle Rd, Zhuhai
珠海九洲大道中1004号 珠海九龙医院
Phone:  (+86 756) 3296666
Fax:  (+86 756) 3350211
Email:  jiulong120@hotmail.com

Has anyone else had any experience with having a baby at this hospital?

Thank you, Jeremy. I will go and check it out next week. It is close enough from where we live and I do hope that they are suitable… otherwise I shall look further afield. Will let you know !

Kaya,

Did you have a chance to go to the hospital? What was it like?

Hello, I live in Zhuhai and had my baby 2 years ago here in Women and Children's hospital, Ningxi district. Kowloon hospital doesn't deliver babies. This hospital is mainly for male health problems :)

I had wonderful experience with my delivery. I had to have my daughter via c-section because she was frank breech with cord twice around her neck. For the delivery, 1 week stay, care for me and my daughter (including private room booking) we paid total a bit over 11000. Vaginal birth would cost almost twice less. One thing though –  they aren't very experienced in breastfeeding so my daughter was latched in a wrong way which took me almost 4 months to correct. But post-delivery and child care I prefer still in the same hospital and would have a baby there again. A friend of mine delivered vaginally her daughter last year and she had a great experience.

I can't say this hospital is equipped to take care of foreigners but you could always find someone speaking English. There are at least two ob-gyn who speak English (I saw one, female).

There are 3 more major hospitals that are well-known: Zhong Da Wu Yuan (they have department for foreigners, vaginal delivery there with the stay and care without complications costs about 5-6.000), RenMin Yi Yuan (People's hospital. No English service. One ob-gyn called dr Yang Ming speaks English. Know one foreigner who had c-section there) and Gongbei Hospital (don't have any friends nor experience with it).

You are welcome to ask more questions. I can recommend you pediatricians as well as general gynecologist here.

Hello! It's been a while… I am now in my 24th week. Time has flown so quickly…

Jeremy, I have not gone to check out the Kowloon Hospital. So can't post any information on it.

However, I have been going to the Zhongshan Uni. 5th Affiliated Hospital. They have a VIP unit where I have a wonderful nurse who speaks English to accompany every single step of the way. Just simple things like registration, where to go for different tests can be daunting in a huge hospital! So far, I have had all the tests done there and they are very, very thorough. I am very pleased so far. I was there today for my monthly check-up and the nurse was telling me that she had helped a Canadian lady give birth naturally only this week. And they seem to be open to having my partner stay with me throughout the process and birth with a cost, although he is not allowed into the examination rooms for scans…

I have also gone to the Women and Childrens' Hospital once to consult whether I needed to have my amniotic fluid checked. Luckily, a Chinese friend has accompanied me there and she helped with the communication. I didn't need to have it checked so i never went back there, but it seemed to be a more crowded, hectic place than the 5th Affiliated. And the absence of an English speaking nurse deterred me from feeling relaxed there. I think if you or your partner speak Chinese, it will be just fine and get what you need but for me it was slightly too alien environment.

The 5th Affiliated is a 15 minute drive from where I live so in that sense it is very convenient. I am very lucky to have been introduced to the English speaking nurse and to be taken care of in such a way that I feel very confident that they will do what needs to be done when it is needed. That gives me peace of mind, which is important right now!

Hi! It's been a while since this thread was updated. Here are few things:

1. Kaya had a beautiful baby boy born via c-section at the #5 affiliated. She was happy with her experience.

(P.S. The reason it was less crowded is because foreigners are given priviledge there of not standing in lines. )

2. Women and Children's now has a nurse at the ob-gyn. There is no International department so it takes time to go through everything. Also, there are more English speaking doctors and we have a wonderful pediatrician we always see there.

3. RenMin hospital now has more nurses and doctors speaking English. There is also no International department but they might as well open one (they have a special English-training program going on atm). It is probably the most crowded hospital of all being a #1 hospital.

More doctors insist on c-section though there is no such necessity. I know of someone who fled Women and Children's just because she saw a doctor who insisted she had to do a c-section as it will be "better for you and for us". I know that doctor – we happened to see him once during my pregnancy and I never ever went back to him (basically, without even looking at the result of the an ultrasound he was trying to assure me the baby's head was down while it was absolutely not :-) ).

I participate in local baby forums and there are many complaints about all hospitals. #5 hospital is not among favoured for giving birth as for the locals it is quite expensive. #1 is the most favorable, then it is Women and Children's and then Gongbei hospital.

If anyone's in Zhuhai and need an objective opinion on hospitals or some tips on which doctors to see in Women and Childrens – contact me over vasate@qq.com (I hope the admin doesn't mind this – it isn't for commercial use :-) ).
