Where Can You Get the Right Mattress in China?

Expats living in China may be in for a rude awakening — or not much sleep at all — upon realizing that in China, beds tend to be hard. In China, many people prefer to sleep on hard beds. But expats may consider Chinese beds to feel similar to sleeping on the floor.

Although a firm mattress may be a good choice for some sleepers, medium firm is typically a safer choice for the average person. When you sleep on a mattress that’s too hard, it’s difficult to feel well supported and get a good night of sleep. Although more firm mattresses are believed to be better for a bad back, that’s not always the case.

The fact is, you need a mattress that can conform to your body to offer the best support, and if your mattress is too hard to do that, you’ll wake up achy and uncomfortable. You might think you can learn to live with it, or get used to sleeping on a harder mattress, but the pain of sleeping on an uncomfortable mattress is likely to just get worse with time, not better.

Unfortunately, a medium firm mattress can be hard to come by in China. But you do have options. You can get used to it, ship your mattress from home, get a mattress topper, or find a softer mattress for sale by retailers in China.

Shipping Your Mattress

Some expats prefer to ship their furniture to China, but doing so can be cost prohibitive and a big hassle. However, if you already have a mattress you love, it may be worth it to ship yours so you know you’ll get a good night’s sleep on a mattress you’re comfortable with. Shipping may be a more attractive option than buying if you need a specialty mattress.

If your ship your mattress, you’ll probably arrive before your furniture container does, so you’ll have to sleep on a different mattress until it gets there. It could get damaged, or it may be too large for your new space — and you’ll probably need to ship your bed to fit, too.

Using a Mattress Topper

If buying a new mattress in China or shipping your existing mattress doesn’t make sense, you can make a hard Chinese mattress more comfortable with a mattress topper. Look for a memory foam or pillow top mattress topper that you can use to soften a hard mattress.

Mattress toppers are smaller and easier to ship than an entire mattress, so you can consider bringing over your mattress topper. Or, you may find that mattress toppers are available locally or online for more reasonable shipping than you’d find for a mattress.

Buying a Mattress in China

If you prefer to buy a mattress in China, you have options. There are some retailers in China that cater to more Western tastes in mattresses and furniture, including:

  • IKEA: Available in China, IKEA offers spring, latex, and foam mattresses, along with mattress pads and beds.
  • SlumberMAAX: This online mattress company caters to expats and offers mattresses and mattress toppers, as well as pillows.
  • Airweave: Another online mattress company, Airweave offers mattresses, futons and mattress toppers that are designed to be comfortable and supportive.
  • Simmons: Simmons operates internationally, including China.
  • Ashley: Ashley Furniture has manufacturing, distribution, and retail showrooms in China, making its furniture and mattress products available to expats in the country.

You don’t have to live with an uncomfortable mattress in China. Consider making a hard Chinese mattress more comfortable with a mattress topper, shipping your mattress from home, or buying a softer mattress available in China.
