The International Peace Maternity & Child Health Hospital of China welfare institute (IPMCH), which was founded by Mme. Soong Ching Ling, the former Honorary Chairman of the Central Committee with the Stalin Peace Prize of 100,000 Russian ruble on 18th Sept 1952, now is an AAA Grade special Ob-Gyn Hospital, attached to Medicine College Shanghai Jiaotong University.
In the past 60 years, IPMCH had continued the mandate of “being experimental and demonstrative” proposed by Mme. Soong Qing Ling and Former Premier Zhou En Lai, and persisted in combining preventive medicine with clinical medicine. Now the hospital has become the intergration of clinical medicine, preventive medicine, research and education. With the improvement of medical care in the past few years, both the maternal mortality rate and the perinatal mortality rate can match that of the developed countries and on the top of domestic women and children healthcare institutes.
IPMCH had received the “National Education & Healthcare Advanced Group Award” in 1960. In 1992, it was honored by Ministry of Health, WHO, and UNICEF as one of the national class “baby-friendly hospital”. In 1994, IPMCH was selected as one of the top ten nationwide model of “baby-friendly hospital” by the Ministry of Health and Canada-China Children’s Health Foundation. Ministry of Health granted the title of “AAA Grade Hospital” in 1995. The “Chinese Natio International Baby-rearing Reward” was received in 2000. IPMCH had received the “National Advanced Group Award” numerous times, “Shanghai ‘May 1st’ Labor Day Medals and the title of “Civilized Unit” from the Shanghai Municipal Government and Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau.
IPMCH also received multiple national awards for its research projects, these awards included second prize of the “National Scientific & Technological Advancement Award”, first prize of the “Chinese Medical Science Award”, the “Ninth Five-Year National Key Scientific Advancement Project’s Outstanding Achievement Award”, second and third prizes of the “Sixth Five-Year National Scientific Advancement Award”, second prize of the “Eighth Five-Year National Scientific Advancement Award”, second and third prizes of the “National Family Planning Council Award”, first prize of “Shanghai Medical Science & Technology Award”, first prize of the “Third Annual Shanghai Clinical Medical Achievement Award”, third prize of the “Shanghai Medical Science & Technology Award”. Its’ breastfeeding push device and one method of cultivating stem cell succeed in obtaining the declared national patent project.
In 1989, IPMCH was approved by Shanghai Municipal Higher Education Bureau and Ministry of Health to become a teaching hospital for Shanghai Second Medical University. The hospital offers undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate training programs. In 2006, IPMCH became affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM); and in 2007, it became affiliated with the Obstetrics and Gynecology Research Institute of SJTUSM. In 2008, its Obstetrics & Gynecology department was one prior developing subject of SJTUSM.
IPMCH is currently divided into Faculty of Clinical Medicine and Faculty of Preventive Medicine. Faculty of Clinical Medicine is subdivided into Department of Obstetrics(including General Ob., Maternal Medicine, Fetus Medicine, Prenatal Consulting, Internal Medicine and Neonatology), Department of Gynecology (including General Gynecology, Oncology, and mammary gland diseases), Department of Family Planning, Assisted Reproduction center, Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Department of Anesthesiology; Faculty of Preventive Medicine is further divided into Preventive Health Care Center, Children’s Health Care Clinic and Health Education Center. IPMCH has 480 beds available in all, annual outpatient visits well exceeds 1,100,000, and the inpatients discharged  are about 30,000 with annual delivery over 15,000. The Obstetric department is prominent in saving the near-missing cases women’ lives, with no maternal death in the past 12 years Currently, the advanced medical technologies including MRI has gradually been used to diagnosis and treat Ob-Gyn disorders. By the end of 2013, IPMCH had employed 894 staff members (90% medical staffs and 10% supportive staff).
“Shanghai Perinatal Consulting Clinic” was established with the help of Shanghai Medical Assoiciation in 1992 with specialists from obstetrics, neo-natology, and ultrasonography to help diagnosis fetal congenital diseases, intrauterine developmental abnormality and perinatal complications, which aims to reduce the major birth defect, to achieve better outcome of pregnancy. IVF-ET center was officially approved by the Ministry of Health in November 2002 among the first group of assisted reproductive centers in Shanghai; In 2006, the Central Laboratory was re-established due to medical and lab research needs, and it is equipped with highly skilled professionals and state-of-the-art laboratory equipments. Currently, the laboratory is focusing on pregnancy-induced hypertension, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, and embryonic stem cell research, and one project had applied national and international patent. In 2009, IPMCH was proved to be Diseases Diagnosis and Treatment Center of SJTUSM for Fetus Abnormality and Cervical Diseases. It was not only the Diseases Diagnosis and Treatment member Center of SJTUSM for Gynecologic Oncology, Breast Diseases, Children’s Respiratory and Circulatory Critically Illness, but also one of the Shanghai Standardized Residency and Fellow Training Hospitals. In 2010, certificated by the Shanghai institute of gynecologic endoscopic treatment technology and AAAA gynecologic laparoscope technology, it became one of four medical institutes which were authorized to carry out AAAA laparoscope procedures. Meanwhile, IPMCH was qualified to conduct drug clinical trial by SFDA. also it became one member of Infertility Diagnosis and Treatment Centers of SJTUSM. In 2011, IPMCH became the first national training institute for gynecologic laparoscope procedures, national institute of breastfeeding promotion of education and development, the standardized anesthesia residency training institute authorized by state ministry of health. In 2012, IPMCH officially became the center of midwife training and nursing duty administration training institute; The Bio-bank project got the financial support by the SJTU “985 biological project” in 2012 and pass the accreditation in 2013. In addition, IPMCH was authorized the National High Quality Nursing Service Demonstration Training Base, the Obstetric Anesthesia Training Base of Chinese Medical Association and Shanghai Standardized Obstetrician and Gynecologist Training Hospital. It was rewarded for its breastfeeding promotion of education and development by the National Ministry of Health in 2013.
The hospital has persistently attached great importance to international medicine communication and cooperation. Various collaborative projects with University of Hong Kong-Queen Mary Hospital, and Monash Institute of Reproduction and Development in Australia, Ohio State University Medical Center, Tokyo Women’s Medical University Hospital, Hyogo Prefectural Kobe Children’s Hospital，Edinburgh University, WHO, UNFPA, UNICEF, Canada-China Children’s Health Foundation, have been carried out to make greater contributions to women and children healthcare.
