Founded in 1935, Shanghai Changning Maternity and Infant Health Hospital is widely recognized for its obstetrics and gynecology and other areas of expertise. For decades, our hospital has been dedicated to providing high quality services and satisfying the needs of local women and infants for necessary health care services as well as clinical diagnosis of common, frequent and severe diseases. We represent an integration of medical treatment, health care, prevention, research and education. In April 2016, Changning Maternity & Infant Hospital became the foremost maternity and infant health hospital in Shanghai to pass the JCI International Accreditation.
Changning Maternity & Infant Hospital has 250 hospital beds and 445 medical staff handling over 640,000 outpatients and over 17000 inpatients and 12,000 deliveries per year. Our clinical departments include Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, Breast, Anesthesiology, Neonatal and Family Planning. The medical technology departments include clinical laboratory, pharmacy, pathological laboratory, functional department(including ultrasound, ECG and BMD) and radiology department.
Moreover, Women Healthcare Department (including clinics of nutrition, endocrinology, traditional Chinese medicine, infertility and stomatology) has been established to provide a comprehensive array of services that meet the needs of women throughout their lifespan. We have also established Children Healthcare Department, including clinics of maternal and infant health care, and pediatric outpatient care.
In March 2003, Changning Maternity & Infant Hospital implemented the first water-birth in China, and was subsequently listed as a permanent member of Water-Birth International (WBI). About 8,000 water-births have been done so far at Changning Maternity & Infant, and we are continuing to recruit and pioneer new medical technologies to improve patient care.
In Shanghai, Changning Maternity & Infant Hospital is the only public hospital that has "no care worker", and is the only hospital insisting on the implementation of “one-to-one Doula service and family member accompanying throughout the delivery process" and "standardized nursing formats". We apply audio-visual teaching during pre-operative education and take videos of sick infants and send to their parents as a humanistic approach. Both practices have been specially awarded by the government and are going to be promoted city-wide.
Furthermore, our minimally invasive gynecology and ultrasound screening technology for fetal malformation have reached the advanced level. Being entrusted with care for the expectant mothers and fetus, Changning Maternity & Infant always find the number of obstetric delivery among the highest in Shanghai. In particular, it is noteworthy that the cesarean section rate is kept below the level specified by the national regulation(<35%); the prenatal mortality rate remains below 3‰; and no maternal death has been reported at Changning Maternity & Infant over the past 15 years.
We also offer educational programs and medical, nutritional, and support services through Shanghai Changning Maternity and Infant Health Institute, providing free premarital care, prenatal health examination, neonatal screening for congenital diseases, and also free health check for preschool children (aged 0-6 years old). The institute also provides gynecological and breast diseases screening for women retired or with low living standard. One is able to see through our work that we aim and strive to provide the most comprehensive maternal and infant health care work in Shanghai.
Changning Maternity & Infant Hospital has developed a reputation for providing exceptional patient care, and our achievements include National Civilized Unit, national class "baby-friendly hospital"(BFHI), the tenth consecutive year of Shanghai Civilized Unit, etc. Changning Maternity & Infant has been officially appointed as the professional obstetric nurse training base in Shanghai since 2003.
